I just saw this.

I haven't even watched it all yet; but what do you think? I have a Stauffer I made, that has angle adjustment, but it is done from the outside.

Oddly, the archtop was out of tune this morning when I went in the basement for a minute. I was just strumming the strings and it sounded horrible. The g and high e were a note or more sharp.
But even the violin with gut strings was in tune. Weird.

Anyway; it's worth it just to see the host. He is out there. Someone in the comments asked, how can you believe when the host has no clue. I was thinking more about the way he was dressed; but different strokes.

Well. The kindle will copy, but not paste. I'll have to go on the computer, and edit it in.

So the Martin SC series specifically engineered for musicians to be able to change their own neck angles with the use of a shim kit has aluminum parts as well. It's not billed as automatic but I frankly don't believe that the automatic billing of the Furch offering always works as intended and I can see it self adjusting when it shouldn't as well.

Show up at a gig and the transport environment of your ax causes your Furch to automatically change neck angles and you don't have time to figure this all out and the show must go on.

No thank you.

Additionally one of the bloodiest battles in history in Lutherie was when Bob Taylor introduced a bolt on neck that could have its angle refreshed also with a shim kit. Traditionalists swore up and down that this decoupled the neck from the box enough that the resulting tone.... sucked. That battle still rages on and of course tone is subjective but in my opinion some things that appear to be true may just be true.

I've never liked the Taylor tone but love the Martin traditional, dovetail tone. A proper dovetail is pretty hard to beat when it comes to tone but again it's subjective and I can't prove it. I do play more guitars in a given week though than 99% of folks.

One issue I've seen with implementations such as this one with dissimilar materials, aluminum, steel, wood is steel bolts will strip out aluminum unless they use steel inserts. Can't see if that is what Furch is doing.

It's always a telltale to me when folks launch into inventing or trying to invent a better mouse trap. It's also often the case that they don't fully understand what is already here and in use when they do.

From Hauser onward and I'm not sure who was first adjustable neck angles have been tried for over a century and have yet to find a market.

I want to know where he got that 45 degree angle ratcheting screwdriver?

I think it's a 1/4" drive with a short extension and a u-joint.

Interesting. So it looks like the handle spins but it doesn’t seem like the shaft is spinning. Is that how a u-joint works?

Oh I get it, I watched on a bigger screen. He’s only turning like 1/4 turn similar to a truss rod. I was thinking it would be a way to more easily put bolts on a M/T but probably not.

That neck joint basically operates the same way as the Doolin/Fleishman adjustable neck joint featured in American Lutherie #86 back in 2006. Obviously Mike Doolin and Harry Fleishman did not have the custom metal hardware, it's not needed and I wouldn't bother with it, but the principle is the same. I found out about it a few years earlier and used it on one of my early acoustics. It worked well although, with only two 1/4" graphite composite rods supporting the fretboard extension, notes above the body join were pretty dead. That would be relatively easy to solve.

The hardware is aluminum? So a repair person checks with a magnet before installing a strap button and thinks all is OK - -
Looks cool though. I like it. Major doubts about auto adjust. Wonder if they tested it out using humidity controlled dry and damp chambers? Germans would be expected to. :)
